Mahogany Hall is the jazz duo of Patrick Courtin and Simon Paterson. They met while performing in Barkerville, and have hundreds of historical theatre performances together under their belts, in addition to many jazz shows.
They are dedicated to their love of swinging jazz standards, particularly the Great American Songbook. They draw from classic singers: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, etc, and interpret their work with a highly personal style informed by both modern and classic jazz.
In April 2020 they released a debut album 'Introductions', which was recorded in February 2020 at Mountainview Studio in Nanaimo, BC, with Rick Salt. The album features Dave Baird on upright bass and James McRae on drums.
Mahogany Hall had their first self-produced BC tour booked for April 2020, with a dozen performances throughout the Cariboo, the Interior, greater Vancouver and the Island. It was of course unfortunately, but necessarily canceled.
Patrick Courtin is a classically trained graduate of the Vancouver Island University Jazz Degree program and former student of the late great Vancouver pianist Bob Murphy. Patrick makes a career not only as a jazz pianist, but also as a musical director, accompanist, arranger, teacher and multi-instrumentalist.
Simon Paterson is a classically trained performing artist who studied at the Old Vic in Bristol, UK, and also in Victoria, BC, with Dr. Marvin Reigner. He has performed professionally in musical theatre in Canada, the US and the UK. Simon brings his impeccable nostalgic voice and lyrical sensitivity to the jazz world with ease.
