James Anderson returned to Scotland in 1872 after nine years of mining for gold in the Colony of British Columbia. His son, David, was ten. The two form a lifelong kinship over a mutual interest in literature and his father's reminiscences of the mining life in the new world. Told from the perspective of David, we learn of the legacy formed between father and son through narration, observation, and flashback, but also of verse James wrote oversees that eventually was gathered and published under the title: Sawney's Letters and Cariboo Rhymes.
